Project work is essential for healthcare organizations to improve. Physicians, nurses, technilogists, administrative personnel, and support staff are assembled to re-engineer services delivery, introduce innovations and new technology, implement patient-centered approaches. In spite of the relatively small size compared to infrastructure or IT projects, these “professional” healthcare projects have nonetheless a high risk of failure. Interestingly project management and collaboration in the project context are not taught to healthcare professionals. This lecture will examine the determinants of project success for healthcare project teams. Results from published research and ongoing studies will be presented with the objective of providing evidence-based recommendations for healthcare project teams to manage innovation and change.
